Ted

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the news of Senator Edward Kennedy’s passing. To me it came in the form of a facebook status, not too long after it happened. And while some may say, as a friend of mine did last night when I first heard the news, that he’s had terminal brain cancer for over a year, his passing still comes as a shock, at least to me. Hell, an article of his was featured in Newsweek just last month. An article that certainly resonated with me, and helped inspire me to get my ass out of the house and (try to) attend a town hall/community dinner on the subject. How could he be gone?

Senator Kennedy may have started out well before my time, but he was a man who was definitely in touch with the concerns of my generation. Healthcare was just one of the issues, though it was one he felt to be most important. He was also revered, even among his colleagues who didn’t agree with him on anything. Sheldon Whitehouse said at a Q&A session that after Kennedy returned to the floor after a medical leave, senators from both sides of the aisle rose, some with tears in their eyes.

Chappaquiddick notwithstanding, Kennedy was a respected man and public servant with a huge legacy, from a political family filled with mystique. His name will go down in the history books, just as his brothers’ names did.

On a much lighter note, let’s talk about some junk mail I received today. This piece is from a company called “Domain Renewal Group,” and they sent me a notice offering to transfer my domain, theamigan.net, to them for the “low” price of $30 for one year. Let’s recap here. I pay $9 a year from namecheap, the domain’s original and current registrar. Why the hell would I go through the trouble to pay more money? Why did they waste their time and money printing the notice? This is the type of garbage environmentalists should be hooting and hollering about; I rarely see more of an utter waste of trees.

That’s all.

AutoTune

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

“Another autotune rant! By someone else! Agh!”

Yes, I heard you. You said something to the effect of the last line, right? Well, I don’t care.

I decided to try a little experiment as I sat here, bored and…bored. I took the (now mostly finished) mixes of Spatula and Gel Cell, threw Logic’s Pitch Corrector plugin on all the vox tracks, and A/B’d them with the originals. What did I hear?

I heard in-tune harmonies on Spatula. In-tune harmonies which completely missed the point of the whole “diabolical” feel of the vocals.

I heard in-tune doubletracking in Gel Cell. Sure, Adam does a decent job keeping in tune with himself. But in 2009, that doesn’t matter. He can sound like a pitch-perfect robot with just two clicks of a pointing device!

So anyway, I hear you saying, “well, Dan, you play synthesizers for chrissakes! If you’re so against mechanically-produced music, then you must be a hypocrite!”

I retort with this: it may be an oscillator (or sample player) producing the sound, but I am in control of it. If I want to detune it x cents, I have the power to do so. (Normally I don’t).

Lastly, the voice is the one instrument that most fluidly and accurately reproduces the emotion felt by the musician. Vocals are raw, powerful representations of emotion, thoughts, and ideas. With this emotion, there will by fluctuations in pitch. If I want a machine to produce voice (or sound like such), I either use a speech synthesizer or a vocoder (or both). Autotune sucks the human quality of vocals not unlike the way in which a shop-vac cleans the floormats in my car. Which is to say, in a very violent fashion.

So, in short, while it may be tempting from an OCD standpoint to plaster autotune all over our vox tracks, I think it is safe to say that autotune will not be making any appearances on M&C’s album, at least not in any capacity that it was originally designed for.

Nationalization

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Today I will be writing about nationalization. Again.

But this time, it’s not about banks and insurance firms. It’s about automakers, specifically GM.

With news that Detriot could “potentially be forced to seek relief under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code” without further government help, nationalization is starting to look like the lesser of many evils to some.

I say go for it, if GM truly is so important to the economy (which it is). They’re using government funds. Why should we trust (mis)management of this money to the very people whose initial failure prompted the bailout in the first place? Like I said in my last post, at least the government is intrinsically accountable to the American people, though whether this is the case in practice is obviously up for debate. Really, one of the few obstacles to such nationalization is all the rednecks who will cry “Communism!” if it happens. But here’s a hint: just because Cuba did something to every company back in the 50s doesn’t mean that we can’t do it to monumentally mismanaged automakers whose survival is effectively a keystone of much of our economy.

This is about a government protecting its citizens from financial hardship which largely came about through no fault of their own. It’s not about any sort of doctrine, or any systematic overthrow of a government, or any of that bullshit. But it just goes to show you what happens when you put the mice in charge of guarding the cheese. The executives fucked up. This fucking up endangers the financial stability of millions of people. They should not be allowed to continue doing this, and especially not while taking home a pretty penny for it.

Think about it.

Musings

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Today was my last day ever at South Kingstown High School.

And I’m decently numb to it.

Here’s my situation. I’m graduating, but not with flying colours. In fact, it is a nigh-surety that my admission from UMD will be rescinded. I’d love if it wasn’t, but some things just cannot be denied or stopped.

And honestly, I don’t care all that much.

As I sit here waiting to be disowned by my douchebag father, I’ve been pondering quite a few things lately. He doesn’t approve of my relationship firstly, and my current semi-employment status doesn’t help matters with him, and before he didn’t even think I was going to graduate. Now that I’m graduating, it’s still not good enough; he’s pissed that I “could have gotten into a good college.” Little does he know that I honestly won’t shed a single tear if I end up going to RIC. I really won’t. I put in my deposit there, and honestly, I have no reservations about sticking around in RI and staying at my mother’s. Hell, it might do me some good. Anyway, all this has lead me to think that his beef is still more with my relationship. Just today he called me “pussy-whipped.” Like he is one to talk on this front, eh? Go figure. Either way, after almost getting kicked out a few times, and still having to put up with his crap every time I see him (he can’t even say “hi” when he sees me without giving me a lecture…it really starts to get old, you know), I really need a change of scenery. Even if my mother doesn’t personally approve of what’s going on, at least she’s nice enough to respect my choices.

Yeah, I know that I might make matters worse for myself down the line, but oh well. Not everybody has to conform to the model of a perfect human in JCP’s fantasy world. There are so many different paths one can take, and not one of them is the “right” way.

L’aggiornamento.

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Gah. It’s been a while.

What’s happened in the world of Dan since the last post? Lots of shit, and if you knew me you’d likely know about it. That said, here’s what else.

First there was Open Mic Night at SKHS on Friday. Which was pretty blah, but I of course figured out ways to make it fun, even if someone ditched Ellen and me at the pizza place. Then there was a show at VFW on Saturday. It was pretty awesome. The Best of Times was good, as were everyone else.

Then I tuned to MSNBC randomly Monday morning and they had the story about the Virginia Tech shootings, the news of which had just broken. First they were saying 2 dead, but when they said 20 a while later, I realised the gravity of the situation. Which brings me to this point: I offer my deepest condolences to all those connected to the victims, but please, do not point fingers at anyone but the perpetrator. The response of the university was as good as anyone could have asked for, and I, for one, believe Mr Steger and his colleagues did a fine job in handling the situation given the information they had. Hindsight is always 20/20. When I heard news today about death threats being made against him, it made me sick. I think you can figure out why. That’s all I will say on the matter for now.

Then I saw This Providence at Edwards Auditorium with Adam on Tuesday. They were actually pretty good.

Oh, and the big Nor’easter felled a tree in my yard. If it fell the other way, the deck would be no more. How nice. Pictures are up on the flickr if you are so inclined (and no, I’m not posting the URL here).

And this same Nor’easter also obliterated Narragansett beach. I mean, it will come back in due time, but from the parking lot (which, by the way, no longer has a fence), you have the wall, a metre of sand, and then surf. Fun stuff. I hope my pictures come out (they probably won’t since it was too dark for my K1000′s light meter to even turn on).

So yeah. This vacation has been an amalgam of boredom and interestingness. We’ll see how it pans out.

Dan out.

Moo.

Today was an interesting day. The first order of business is about people who are so arrogant as to assume that my unwillingness to talk to them signifies a problem on my part. Hint: if I don’t want to talk to you, there is nothing “wrong” with me. It just means “shut the fuck up.”

The second order of business occurred in gym today. I was bowling a fairly sucky game, per usual, and decided to try a new technique. Except I didn’t execute it properly, and the ball ended up jumping lanes and getting stuck in the gutter halfway down. I was subsequently told to “up the maturity level [sic]” by the instructor (I refuse to call him a gym “teacher” for real teachers, well, teach) and that I was acting like an elementary schooler. Disregarding the fact that the incident was caused by a legitimate desire to improve my technique, my snickering when he said “I got balls jumping lanes over here” garnered an “it’s not funny. Do you want to be allowed to come back here?” In general, it was an amusing period.

Also of note is the increasing amount of “I don’t give a fuck” in my life. Chem grade went from a 98 to a 70 in a span of a week? I don’t give a fuck. Prom coming up? I don’t give a fuck. License delayed till June? I don’t give a fuck. Such is the essence of Dan.

Well, that about sums it up. I think. Dan out.

Urination? Gum in your hair?

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

So today was an interesting day. First, during study, Brian and I witnessed someone urinate on the cafeteria floor. As I recall, we heard the distinct sound of water hitting floor tile and looked over to see the person in question putting his phallus away. He subsequently moved to the next booth over with the acquaintance he was sitting with. As I recalled in an AIM conversation with Matt:

(18:02:04) Dan: after it happened I just was staring at Brian in disbelief going
(18:02:29) Dan: “we’re in high school. we are all over the age of three. someone a grade higher than us just urinated on the floor.”
(18:03:00) Matt: haha

Then, a certain asshole decided to put gum in my hair during band today, which I didn’t notice until I got home and was leisurely running my fingers through my hair. I know exactly who it was. If you also know who it is (just ask me…I would post his its name here but that’s just asking for a lawsuit of sorts), I urge you to harass him as much as possible. You know, with usual Dan harassment, such as “I hope you get an STD of the worst kind; one that involves pus leaking from the short organ you call a phallus for the rest of your life,” or “The gum thing was quite funny, but it’ll be my turn to laugh when you’re the one manning the frialator at one of the fine local restaurants specialising in reconstituted animal patty on a bun.”

That is all. Dan out.

Detained, among other things

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

I haven’t posted in a long time. So here goes.

Yesterday, I was talking to Pete and I showed him a simple demo of a patch I made a couple days ago on my synth. It sounded spacey, like a UFO landing or something. He asked if Enthused could use it in a song on their next album. I said yes. That’s it.

Next, I’ve been on a Plan 9 from Outer Space kick lately. It’s really a great movie. You should watch it. Really. I’m serious.

Then, today I was detained by the….erm….authorities for use of Putty to ssh into styx where I could get all my files from school, and do work. This is nothing new; I’ve been doing this since 8th grade with no major problems. Matt got bitten in the ass that year for installing winVNC (pronounced “vee-unkh” by our wonderful assistant principal at the time) on a machine in the computer lab (he forgot not to install the server component….a stupid mistake). Then he got yelled at for doing exactly what I was doing just a few months ago, and had the usual account suspension. (he was sshing into his box to setup a proxy server for something, and Mr Snow [admin] logged into his terminal and started moving the mouse on him. He was subsequently called down to Lynch’s office and reprimanded, and had his account disabled for a week or so).

My story starts a couple days ago when I was in the library for study and doing some quick changes to the fakedbfs code, because I had a cool idea to implement a part of fedit(1) as a shell instead of just running it from the user’s shell for each command. As I was implementing this, the librarian came up behind me and asked me what I was doing; I promptly explained that I was programming. She said that I probably shouldn’t be doing that. I said fine. A few minutes later, someone else came up and questioned me, and I told them what putty was and she said “I guess it’s ok if it’s going through.” I figured that was the end of the situation.

But I was proven wrong today when all three of Kroll, Chronin, and said librarian asked me to go to Kroll’s office. I went in, and Chronin said “I hear tell you’ve been doing some monkey business on the computers,” to which I replied “Well, it’s just logging into my system at home; nothing malicious. Where in the AUP does it say I can’t do this?” I should have shut my big mouth right before the last question, but I didn’t. He replied “don’t get smart….it’s just common sense.” I wanted to give a nice witty riposte, but I figured that would be a bad idea, and refrained from doing so. Kroll proceeded to tell me that she talked to Snow about putty and he said that I knew exactly what I was doing, and that I was circumventing the firewall. I said that port 443 is indeed open (in 8th grade, when this firewall BS started [all ports but 80 and 443 blocked], I setup styx to run sshd on 443 as well and all was fine) and hence I wasn’t really circumventing anything (you can argue that this is BS all you want, but it’s true). Chronin then said that my account would be disabled for one week as a “slap on the fingers” (he later explained that it wasn’t even a slap on the wrist, and that he initially recommended a much harsher punishment, but Kroll intervened and said it wasn’t anything too bad). I told him I had no intent of malice and was simply trying to do work, since I could also access my school-related files on styx from the terminals at school (such as the speech I was writing when they called me in for questioning). They thanked me for my honesty in the matter. I said “fair enough” and left. That was the end of that. But now I have nothing to do in study, especially for the next week (and I’m not chancing it with putty anymore, so probably for the remainder of the quarter as well). Oh well.

And that’s it. Have fun.

amd64, dead babies, Charles Darwin

Friday, January 13th, 2006

I recently got the new drive (thanks Matt) and installed FreeBSD/amd64 on it. Suffice it to say that I’m not too impressed.

Firstly, compatibility on amd64 really needs improvement. I know work is currently being done on this, but it hasn’t been committed yet. But I can’t run opera (yet…), xnview, the nVidia binary driver (which is currently in the works, but they’re awaiting some “feature” that isn’t available in FreeBSD/amd64…personally I think it’s bullshit, but we’ll see), openoffice, and stuff crashes sporadically. So in short, this is a big showstopper, and is preventing me from doing a complete switch to amd64.

Also of note is that amd64 seems to use a little more RAM (for obvious reasons…sizeof(long) is now 64 bits).

There were also some small bugs in certain apps (that I fixed with only a few lines of code), namely because of the interchanging of int and long.

I’ll see how things pan out, but for now i386 is probably going to be my primary platform.

Also, I’ve heard quite my fair share of dead baby jokes these past couple of days. No, I’m not a necroinfantophile (that’s tounge-in-cheek, yay!).

And to end on a tragic note, someone fell to his demise after losing his grip while trying to ride the escalator handrail to the third floor at Providence Place. I just think it’s evolution doing its work, but that’s just me. Darwin awards, anyone?

Straight hair, new releases

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

So it turns out that I currently have straight hair. That’s all I will say on the matter (inquire privately if you really want to know.)

And I released fakedbfs 1.1.0 because I am a lazy piece of shit who doesn’t feel like delivering on all of my promises (a windows port, namely).

And today was the last day before the non-denominational festivity-like event break. How fun.

And a new issue of the Rebellion came out recently, but I haven’t been able to secure a copy. I’ll keep you all posted if I find any more Stupid Shit written by Stupid Shits™.

And I’m out of things to say. Bye.
